Review : The Nanny Diaries

The Nanny Diaries
(drama)
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, Chris Evans
Direction: Shari Springer Berman

IF you loved The Devil Wears Prada , rest assured, you will like this one. Because both the films follow the same storyline. They view the lives of the She-Devils (the super-rich, supposedly insensitive, high-society miss) through the wide-eyed innocence of young, working class girls. And come up with similar conclusions: The b***hes aren't really bad; the devil wears Prada and a heart on its sleeve too!

College grad Scarlett Johansson faces her first interview question: So who are you? That's an easy one, she smiles and begins to answer it. But hey, what's this, she stammers, stutters and realises she doesn't know who she is. She walks out of the interview and sits in Central Park, wondering what comes next. Abracadabra! She saves a boisterous kid and ends up as a nanny in a swanky Manhattan house, taking time-off to discover who she really is. Isn't an easy search, specially when her employer (Laura Linney) is the perfect boss -- absolutely and irrationally demanding. And the family is a completely dysfunctional one with a husband who likes to get touch-feely with the hot nanny.

Add to this, a rich neighbour who likes to send her roses and a mother who likes to see her daughter in power suits instead of a domestic help and you have some nice dramatic tension to rev up the show. Johansson tries hard to don the plain Jane look, but can't keep the cute-cool girl away for long. Quite natty, this little nanny.

Bollywood Stars Rumors and Facts

The world is a global marketplace and where once India was faced with watching Hollywood reruns, Bollywood is now one of the largest most powerful motion picture production facilities in the world.

Statistics: 1000 Hindi-language films are produced every year. Ticket sales exceed 3.6 billion.

Hollywood has its stars, so too does Bollywood and while the world's tabloids may focus on Britney Spears, Yana Gupta and Abhay Deol are not far behind with a relationship that was secret, but now has been made public.

Randeep Hooda and Sushmita Sen are rumored to be having secret meetings on horseback, but the rumors were denied... "Where do you hear all this? Its complete rubbish," laughs Sushmita. Aishwarya Rai has no intentions of quitting movies simply because she is married; and is paired with Gerard Depardieu in the film Asterix at the Olympic Games.

Another of Bollywood's babes Monalisa (real name Antara Biswas) continues to draw attention and gasps from men (and some women) across India as she posses in revealing photographs and videos. Talking of photoshoots Gauri Khan graces the cover of US magazine "Vogue" and tells all in an expo'se.

Deepika Padukone a beautiful Bollywood heartbreaker, makes movies (latest Om Shanti Om) and works toward a Bachelors degree at Indira Gandhi National Open University. Heartbreakers John Abraham and Bipasha Basu have exchanged rings and will be married soon. Bollywood may never be the same with these eligible Bollywood stars getting hitched.

Bollywood stars don't let the fame get in the way of their faith though. Amitabh Bachchan has not forgotten his faith recently travelling to the Golden Temple and the Durgiana temple to offer prayers for the actor's mother actor's mother Teji Bachchan.

Sonali Kulkarni, breaks her silence and tells the world about her transparent dress, claiming she wears it all the time and it was merely a trick of the light. As for this reporter, I plan to travel with a flash light from now on.

Bollywood news, much like Hollywood loves to have a glimpse into the minds, hearts and lives of their stars. It is sometimes amazing that a movie star is simply a person; living life just like the rest of us.

Chhote Nawab has committed his heart to Kareena Kapoor. While there is rumor of trouble, Chhote says, "A lot of people say a lot of things. She's the most wonderful person I know".

Bollywood is not above capitalizing on the fact their actors and actresses often undertake new, challenging and often controversial roles. Mallika Sherawat is being considered by director Kundan Shah's for the role of a prostitute-turned-politician in his new film. Rakesh Roshan has deprived Deepika Padukone of fame and fortune and the Bollywood "A list", turning her down for consideration in the new film staring Hrithik Roshan.

Bollywood may play second to Hollywood, but those times may soon change if writer's strikes and inflated production continue to drive producers away from the golden shores of LA. Bollywood is here to stay and Britney Spears may soon be calling. Bollywood has its own internationally known stars such as the actress Shilpa Shetty who has recently appeared in the controversial United Kingdom's Big Brother television program.

Fact or Fiction: Bollywood is a real city in India? Bollywood is not an actual place; it was created in the minds of the press. (Bombay and Hollywood) And while there are many critics, stating this makes us appear as second cousins to Hollywood; it is a name that seems destined to remain.

Bollywood stars such as Aishwarya Rai Bolly-Wood actress, and Aamir Khan actor are often involved in rumors. The latest Bollywood star stories and latest Bollywood Entertainment News about new Bollywood movies and actors is available at Bolly-Wood.in

Children being taught to race ahead by hook or crook: Aamir

Rueing the trend that teaches children to race ahead "by hook or by crook", Bollywood star Aamir Khan on Saturday said society should instead teach them to move forward together and bring about a change for good.

The actor-director said he himself never subscribed to this way of "grooming children" and tried to convey the message through his latest film 'Taare Zameen Par'.

"The trend in our society is such that we infuse our children with a spirit of competition from a very early age, killing sensitivity within them, with the result that our children grow up into adults who want to race ahead by hook or by crook", Aamir said at the ongoing Literature Festival here.

There was nothing wrong in trying to move ahead but the instinct of "racing ahead at the cost of others was wrong and this was what we were instilling in children, he said.

"We should teach our children to not only realise their strengths but also the weaknesses of people around them, and hence, lend them a hand, so everyone is able to progress...If we adopt this approach in our lives, a whole generation would change for good," he said.

Asked whether as a public figure he felt tempted to speak out his mind on issues concerning society, Aamir said his experience of doing so had left hi bruised.

"When I spoke for a public cause, I did not get enough support from other quarters of society. I got a taste of politics unusual for me and it left me bruised," he said in an apparent reference to the attack on him for his stand on the Narmada dam issue.

Aamir Khan finally quits smoking

After the release of Taare Zameen Par, Aamir has been extremely appreciated by everyone. Meanwhile this new dedicated actor-turned-director has gone through a different experience. Interacting with his fans on his blog, Aamir informs that he has finally kept his promise by quitting his habit of smoking.

“Yes I have finally kicked the bad habit. I know I know I can already hear all of you all scream and shout. I was supposed to give up on 31st. But I didn’t (which is one of the reasons I was avoiding posting). I tried my best... but I'm sorry I couldn’t then... but I have now... so please don’t give me grief... instead support me now”, says Aamir.

Not just smoking, Aamir is all set to get other things back in order to make his life easy. His list includes routines like sleeping early, regular work outs, and to get back on healthy diet. Aamir wants to make his life more organized like his work. He will start working on the DVD of TZP , also on the release plan of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, the next release of his production house which marks the debut of his nephew Imraan Khan.

Aamir also informs that he will start pre production work of his next film Delhi Belly which is an action comedy based in Delhi. Aamir will only produce and not direct it. Besides that he is also planning to start one more film that is yet to be titled. All this while, he will also shoot for Ghajini .

“The past few months have been quite a ride. The last month was the most exciting, nerve racking, exhausting, rejuvenating, draining, enriching experience for me. Am I ever going to recover? I feel like I’ve been stuffed into a washing machine which doesn’t have an off button. After this I really need to be put out to dry in the sun and left alone.” He grins as he will start shooting for Ghajini from today onwards.

'Taare Zameen Par' rocks overseas audience

After recieving effusive praise from critics across India and leaving many a cinegoer moist-eyed, 'Taare Zameen Par' has earned excellent reviews worldwide, while garnering excellent collections in the overseas territories. The film's moving and poignant portrayal of how a childhood of carefree abundance is trampled by the dictates of a system putting premium of perfectionists and perfectionism has got it standing ovations from the audiences and great reviews from International critics.
Being distributed by UTV Motion Pictures in the overseas market, 'Taare Zameen Par' ('TZP') has collected more than 1.45 million US dollars in the US and West Asia alone at the end of the second weekend, making it a bigger opener than 'Chak De India' in the US market. The film, in the US, has raked in 850,000 US dollars with 71 prints on 66 screens in the first week. The excellent audience response led the film to be expanded to 69 screens on 74 prints in the second week. UTV sources said the word of mouth is extremely strong on this film, which has sustained it during the weekdays showings. There have also been reports of standing ovations all across North America. ''Looking at the response to the film, we assertain that it will be one of the top four Hindi films from India in the US,'' Siddharth Roy Kapur, EVP Marketing, Syndicate and Distribution, UTV Motion Pictures, said.
In the Gulf, 'TZP' received great accolades and at the end of the second week, collections having crossed 600,000 US dollars on just 25 prints. What was highlighted in this market was the way the film's collections have held strong over the weekdays as well.

Though a slow starter, a strong word of mouth publicity for the the film saw 'TZP' evoke a strong response from the audiences, drawing crowds even during the weekdays when the collections areusually seen to take a dip. ''Every once in a while you are taken aback by a movie. It is a rare experience, especially coming from Bollywood. 'Taare Zameen Par' is a different experience altogether. The movie is one of the best ones to come out of the Bollywood factory,'' says Shariq Hamid who runs Funasia, a multiplex chain with 27 screens across four cities in the US. Aamir Khan's sensitive narration, in the movie, of the story of a dyslexic child Ishaan Awasthi, whose parents' and teachers' impatience with his learning disabilities leaves him devastated, turning him into a recluse, has won encomiums and evoked laudatory reviews from critics across India. Infact, the heart-wrenching scenes of the child Ishaan, undergoing mental trauma due to the impatience and frustration of his parents and teachers at his lack of progress, have had many in the film fraternity, even the hard-hearted ones, benumbed and almost moved to tears. Filmmakers like Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Madhur Bhandarkar and Anurag Kashyap recently admitted to have been deeply moved by the film's fervent plea to society not to curb the feeling of innocence and carefree abundance characterised by childhood.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, whose films like the unreleased 'Paanch' and the recently released 'Black Friday' and 'No Smoking' have delved into the dark sides of human psyche says, '''Taare Zameen Par' took me back to my hostel days. If you take away the dyslexia, it seems like my story. The film affected me so deeply that I was almost left speechless.
''After watching the film, I was asked how I liked 'Taare Zameen Par'. I could not talk as I was deeply overwhelmed.''
The tremendous impact that 'TZP' had on him led Anurag to write about the film on his personal blog, even though he admitted it was not his kind of film.
